OCR is the process of taking a scanned image and recognizing the text. It is usually used in conjunction with a scanning process and has one of the following features : making documents searchable or creating an editable file from a scanned image. Depending on the requirement, most OCR engines offer a variety of output types such as plain text, Microsoft Word, Adobe PDF, HTML, Microsoft Excel, etc.
There are a wide variety of desktop OCR applications available in the market: Nuance paper port, Nuance omni page, eCopy desktop, adobe acrobat and many others.
The shapes of different characters are detected by shinning light on them and sensing the pattern of the reflected light. Each pattern is compared with the set of pre-defined patterns until the closest match is found.
Scanners were originally designed to scan pictures for imaging and archival. Now, they can also be used to scan text in to a word processor.
